CVE-2020-11002Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Remote code execution via interpolated validation messages

Published Apr 10, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Server-side template injection in Dropwizard before 1.3.21 and 2.0.0 through 2.0.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code. ViolationCollector.addViolation() passes untrusted self-validation messages to ConstraintValidatorContext.buildConstraintViolationWithTemplate(), which evaluates embedded Java EL. Exposure requires an application to use @SelfValidating and copy attacker-controlled bean properties into a violation message; code runs with the Dropwizard service account privileges.
