CVE-2020-10995Network attack vector

Service degradation via recursive DNS query amplification

Published May 19, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

DNS amplification in PowerDNS Recursor 4.1.0 through 4.3.0 allows remote attackers to degrade DNS service via crafted authoritative replies. Random subdomains in NSDNAME fields of NS records make the recursor issue excessive queries to additional authoritative servers. Exploitation requires an attacker-controlled authoritative server and can degrade both recursive and authoritative DNS service without host compromise.
