Root code execution via inherited Perl environment
Published May 27, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in Sympa before 6.2.56 allows local users to execute arbitrary code as root through setuid wrapper binaries. The wwsympa-wrapper.fcgi and sympa_soap_server-wrapper.fcgi programs pass the caller's environment to Perl scripts, while sympa_newaliases-wrapper does the same as root, allowing PERL5LIB or PERLLIB to load an attacker-controlled module. Any local user can first gain the sympa account's privileges through a FastCGI wrapper, then invoke the group-restricted newaliases wrapper for root execution.
