Unauthorized task access via permissive RPC endpoint
Published Apr 1, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Authorization bypass in Avast Antivirus before 20 allows local users to access protected tasks through an untrusted process. The aswTask RPC endpoint in the TaskEx library of AvastSvc.exe accepts task operations without enforcing the intended caller restrictions. Self Defense must be enabled; public records do not identify the reachable tasks or resulting actions, so the consequence is limited to unauthorized task access.
