Privilege escalation via arbitrary file creation
Published May 21, 2020 · Updated Aug 19, 2026
Elevation of privilege in Microsoft Windows Media Service allows local users to take control of affected systems via arbitrary file creation. Windows Media Service improperly creates files at attacker-chosen locations when a specially crafted local application invokes it. Exploitation requires prior logon and local application execution; successful abuse grants control over the affected system.
