Host crash via malformed guest MSR write
Published Feb 11, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Improper input validation in Microsoft Hyper-V on four 1903 and 1909 Windows releases allows guest OS users to crash the host. The hvix64 hypervisor mishandles a guest write to model-specific register 0xC0002008, causing a stack overflow instead of safely rejecting the value. Exploitation requires a privileged account inside a running guest virtual machine; the demonstrated consequence is host unavailability, with no reported data disclosure or modification.
