Local privilege escalation via MSI symbolic links
Published Feb 11, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Elevation of privilege in Microsoft Windows Installer allows local users to add or remove files by running a crafted application. During MSI processing, Windows Installer follows attacker-controlled symbolic links or reparse points instead of enforcing access restrictions on the destination. The attacker must first log on and execute the application; successful exploitation permits file creation or deletion with elevated system privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
