Local privilege escalation via MSI symbolic links
Published Feb 11, 2020 · Updated Oct 21, 2025
Windows Installer in supported Microsoft Windows releases allows local users to elevate privileges through a crafted MSI package. When processing attacker-controlled symbolic links or reparse points, the installer follows them during privileged file operations and bypasses access restrictions to add or remove files. The attacker must first log on and run a crafted application; successful exploitation can modify protected files under installer privileges.
