Privilege escalation via improper hard-link handling
Published Feb 11, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in Microsoft Windows Error Reporting allows local users to overwrite a targeted file by abusing hard links. The Windows Error Reporting manager improperly accepts a hard-linked file during privileged report processing, causing its write to reach the linked target. Exploitation requires logon and execution of a crafted application, after which the process can obtain elevated control of the affected host.
