SYSTEM privilege escalation via service-tracing file move
Published Feb 11, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in Microsoft Windows allows local users to execute code as SYSTEM through Windows Service Tracing. Writable tracing registry keys let a low-privileged user redirect a SYSTEM-context log rollover through object-manager symbolic links, causing a user-owned file to be moved into a protected path. Local code execution is required; replacing a privileged DLL and inducing its load grants SYSTEM access, while the file-move primitive can overwrite protected files.
