Local privilege escalation via negative GATT offset
Published May 14, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Out-of-bounds write in Android 8.0, 8.1, 9, and 10 allows local users to escalate privileges through a Bluetooth GATT response. GattServer::SendResponse fails to reject a negative offset before its size check and forwards that offset in the response structure, enabling an out-of-bounds write. Exploitation requires code execution with ordinary user privileges on the device, needs no user interaction, and can elevate privileges locally.
