Audio silencing via unchecked setMasterMute call
Published Mar 10, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Missing authorization in Android 10 AudioService allows local users to silence device audio by invoking the hidden setMasterMute method. AudioService.setMasterMute accepts the Binder call without enforcing the MODIFY_AUDIO_ROUTING system permission, so an ordinary app can change the global mute state. Exploitation requires local app execution but no user interaction and interrupts device audio without disclosing data or executing code.
