Root privilege escalation via tcpdump post-rotate command

Published Jun 7, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Privilege escalation in 3CX Phone System 16.0.0.1570 allows remote authenticated users to gain root access through PhoneSystem Terminal. The phonesystem account can run tcpdump through passwordless sudo, and tcpdump's -z option executes an attacker-chosen post-rotate program as root. A valid terminal login is required; successful exploitation grants full control of the underlying Debian-based server.
