Unauthenticated code execution via unchecked CSRF-token deserialization
Published May 31, 2019 · Updated Oct 21, 2025
Deserialization in Sitecore CMS 7.0 through 7.2 and XP 7.5 through 8.2 allows remote attackers to execute code via CSRF tokens. SitecoreAntiCsrfModule deserializes the __CSRFTOKEN POST parameter using ObjectStateFormatter without signature validation before comparing it with __CSRFCOOKIE. The vendor identifies a broader affected span from CMS 6.6.3 through XP 8.2.7; reachable /sitecore/shell pages require no authentication, and injected code runs with the service account's privileges.
