Permission changes via misrouted named-stream attributes
Published Dec 26, 2022 · Updated Apr 14, 2025
Authorization bypass in the SMB server in Nexenta NexentaStor 4.0.5 and 5.1.2 allows remote authenticated users to alter permissions. Requests targeting a ZFS-backed NT named stream forward certain extended-attribute operations to the underlying file instead of the stream. An authenticated SMB account with WRITE_XATTR access can therefore change permissions on the underlying object and gain unintended file access.
