Local privilege escalation via unchecked iATU region
Published Jan 6, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Out-of-bounds write in the Android kernel for Pixel Neural Core allows local users with System privileges to elevate privileges. The set_outbound_iatu function multiplies an unchecked region value to derive an iATU register offset, then writes through the resulting out-of-range address. Exploitation requires existing System execution privileges on an affected Pixel device and no user interaction; the resulting memory corruption enables local privilege escalation.
