CVE-2019-7630

Ring-0 code execution via unfiltered MSR writes

Published Mar 25, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Improper MSR validation in Gigabyte APP Center before 19.0227.1 allows local users to execute arbitrary code in Ring 0. The gdrv.sys handler for IOCTL 0xC3502580 passes an unfiltered attacker-selected Model Specific Register to the wrmsr instruction, permitting overwrite of the kernel system-call handler. The driver must already be loaded, or administrative rights are required to load it; successful exploitation grants kernel-level control of the host.
