Ring-0 code execution via unrestricted MSR writes
Published May 18, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in AMD ATI Diagnostics utility 5.11.9.0 allows local users to execute arbitrary code in Ring 0. IOCTL 0x9C40256C in atillk64.sys exposes wrmsr to user mode without validating the target MSR, allowing the system call handler to be overwritten. The driver must already be loaded; otherwise, loading it requires administrator rights, and successful exploitation grants kernel-level control.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Published CVSS scores
No CVSS assessment is available in this record.
CVSS describes severity. EPSS estimates exploitation probability.
