Ring-0 code execution via unfiltered MSR writes
Published Mar 25, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in AIDA64 before 5.99 allows local users to execute Ring-0 code through a crafted driver control request. The kerneld.sys handler for IOCTL 0x80112084 accepts an attacker-selected Model Specific Register and executes wrmsr without restricting the target MSR. Access to the installed Windows driver is required; successful exploitation permits arbitrary MSR writes and kernel-level control over the host.
