Unauthenticated code execution via attacker-selected templates

Published Mar 25, 2019 · Updated Oct 21, 2025

Template injection in Atlassian Confluence Server's Widget Connector allows remote attackers to execute code via macro preview requests. The /rest/tinymce/1/macro/preview endpoint accepts an attacker-controlled _template parameter and renders the selected resource as a Velocity template. Exploitation requires a reachable vulnerable instance with Widget Connector enabled, but no credentials or user interaction; injected templates execute code with the server process's privileges.
