LocalSystem code execution via unquoted service path
Published Feb 11, 2026 · Updated Feb 11, 2026
Unquoted service path handling in Softalk Ltd WorkgroupMail 7.5.1 allows local users to execute code as LocalSystem during service startup. The WorkgroupMail service registers C:\Program Files (x86)\WorkgroupMail\wmsvc.exe -s as an unquoted BINARY_PATH_NAME, so Windows can select an attacker-placed executable at an earlier space-delimited path component. A low-privileged local user needs write access to such an earlier path and a service restart, after which the substituted program runs with full LocalSystem privileges.
