System-administrator access via first-user role assignment
Published Jun 19, 2020 · Updated Aug 5, 2024
Privilege escalation in Mattermost Server before 5.8.0 allows remote attackers to obtain system-administrator access as the first user. Mattermost has not published the locus or faulty role-assignment operation that causes an unintended first account to receive the system_admin role. Exploitation requires an attacker-controlled account to become the deployment's first user; that role permits system-wide administrative actions.
