Administrator account takeover via forged theme options

Published May 21, 2020 · Updated Aug 5, 2024

Cross-site request forgery in Gila CMS before 1.11.6 allows remote attackers to compromise an administrator account via stored XSS. The admin/themes form accepts cross-origin POSTs without an anti-CSRF token and stores unsanitized theme option values for later page rendering. Exploitation requires a signed-in administrator to visit an attacker-controlled page; injected script can read non-HttpOnly session tokens and take over the account.
