CVE-2019-20496

Root-level ownership changes via log processing

Published Mar 17, 2020 · Updated Aug 5, 2024

Improper privilege management in cPanel before 82.0.18 allows local users to change arbitrary file ownership as root during log processing. The log-processing code performs a root-privileged chown operation on an attacker-selected target, but cPanel has not disclosed the responsible file or function. A local low-privileged account is required, and successful exploitation changes file ownership rather than reading data or interrupting service.
