SYSTEM privilege escalation via arbitrary DACL write
Published Feb 20, 2020 · Updated Aug 5, 2024
Local privilege escalation in Electronic Arts Origin 10.5.55.33574 allows local users to gain SYSTEM access through DACL manipulation. The OriginClientService named-pipe handler validates the client executable rather than its in-memory process and accepts a modified CreateDirectory command that writes an attacker-chosen DACL through a hardlink. A local account, injected code in Origin.exe, and a triggering game reinstall allow a service binary's permissions to be changed for SYSTEM-level code execution.
