SYSTEM privilege escalation via writable driver DLLs
Published Jan 24, 2020 · Updated Aug 5, 2024
Local privilege escalation in affected Ricoh Windows printer drivers allows local users to execute code as SYSTEM during printer setup. The drivers create C:\ProgramData\RICOH_DRV with inherited Everyone Full Control permissions, allowing PrintIsolationHost.exe to load attacker-replaced DLLs as SYSTEM. Exploitation requires a regular Windows account that can install an affected driver and add a printer, and successful loading is timing-sensitive.
