Command execution via shell-interpreted transfer arguments
Published Feb 24, 2020 · Updated Aug 5, 2024
Command injection in pacman before 5.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands through a crafted database and package. download_with_xfercommand() substitutes an unvalidated package URL into XferCommand and passes the resulting string to system(), which interprets embedded shell metacharacters. Exploitation requires an unsigned repository database, an enabled non-default XferCommand, and retrieval of the crafted package; commands run with pacman's privileges.
