Local privilege escalation via HKCU registry precedence
Published May 18, 2020 · Updated Aug 5, 2024
Privilege escalation in Ivanti WorkSpace Control before 10.4.40.0 allows local users to gain administrative rights through registry hijacking. The pwrgrid.exe launcher checks per-user HKCU registry entries before machine-level entries when starting an application with elevated rights, allowing user-controlled values to take precedence. A locally authenticated, low-privileged account must modify the relevant registry entries and invoke the elevated application path; successful exploitation grants administrative control over the Windows system.
