Service interruption via catastrophic color-validation backtracking
Published Mar 10, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in GitLab Enterprise Edition 8.3 through 12.0.2 allows remote attackers to interrupt service. The regular expression in app/validators/color_validator.rb backtracks excessively while validating a long, specially formatted color value. Exploitation requires a crafted color string; repeated requests can consume most server CPU and keep the entire GitLab service unavailable.
