Authenticated command execution via unsafe BSON evaluation

Published Dec 24, 2019 · Updated Oct 21, 2025

Code injection in mongo-express before 0.54.0 allows remote authenticated users to execute host commands via crafted BSON input. The toBSON function in lib/bson.js evaluates submitted text inside a Node.js vm context, where constructor access escapes the context and reaches process and child_process. Access to a BSON-processing interface, such as the create-index field, is required; deployments with HTTP basic authentication disabled expose execution under the application's host permissions.
