Media-processing denial of service via unchecked SPS counts
Published Dec 2, 2024 · Updated Dec 3, 2024
Out-of-bounds read in Android 7, 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 8, and 8.1 allows attackers to crash media processing via crafted HEVC data. The libhevc SPS parser accepts out-of-range num_short_term_ref_pic_sets or num_long_term_ref_pics_sps values, allowing later reference-picture array access beyond valid bounds. Exploitation requires user interaction and no additional privileges; the documented consequence is denial of service, not code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
