CVE-2018-9403

Local privilege escalation via unchecked HAL report data

Published Dec 4, 2024 · Updated Dec 5, 2024

A stack buffer overflow in the MediaTek HAL in Google Android before the 2018-06-05 patch level allows local users to gain System privileges. The MTK_FLP_MSG_HAL_DIAG_REPORT_DATA_NTF handler in flp2hal_interface.c writes diagnostic report data to a stack buffer without checking its bounds. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access to a device containing the affected MediaTek HAL; no user interaction is required.
