CVE-2018-9339

Local privilege escalation via Parcel list type confusion

Published Nov 19, 2024 · Updated Nov 20, 2024

Type confusion in the Android Framework in Android 8.0 and 8.1 allows local users to gain additional privileges through crafted Parcel list data. Dataset and SaveRequest pass typed lists through Parcel.java's generic readTypedArrayList and writeTypedArrayList methods instead of a matching concrete Parcelable CREATOR, allowing incompatible types to be reconstructed. A local low-privileged application can exploit the mismatch without user interaction and gain additional permissions.
