Local privilege escalation via unchecked string-pool bounds
Published Nov 19, 2024 · Updated Nov 21, 2024
Out-of-bounds write in Android 6.0 through 8.1 allows local users to elevate privileges by installing a crafted application package. ResStringPool::setTo in libs/androidfw/ResourceTypes.cpp trusts attacker-modified size and data fields without checking that they remain within the string-pool buffer. Exploitation requires a local malicious application, needs no additional execution privileges or user interaction, and grants additional permissions.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
