Local privilege escalation via overprivileged MRTG processes
Published Oct 30, 2025 · Updated Oct 30, 2025
Privilege escalation in the MRTG graphing component of Nagios XI before 5.5.7 allows local users to gain elevated OS privileges. Before the fix, MRTG-related processes and scripts ran with excessive privileges while exposing file or command execution paths and writable resources. Limited local system access is required, and successful abuse elevates the user's OS privileges rather than exposing a remote attack path.
