CVE-2017-18738

Unauthenticated memory corruption via stack overflow

Published Apr 23, 2020 · Updated Aug 5, 2024

Stack-based buffer overflow in NETGEAR router firmware before listed fixed versions allows remote attackers to compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability through adjacent-network requests. The pre-authentication request handler copies attacker-controlled data into a stack buffer without adequate bounds checking; NETGEAR does not publish the exact function or parameter. No credentials or user interaction are required, but the attacker must reach the router from an adjacent network, and the resulting impact can include code execution or service interruption.
