Unauthorized lighting control via replayable BLE writes
Published Feb 10, 2020 · Updated Aug 5, 2024
Cleartext BLE communication in Syska Smart Bulb devices through 2017-08-06 allows physically proximate attackers to capture RGB commands. The bulb's vendor-defined GATT characteristic accepts unencrypted RGB byte strings at handle 0x0012 and accepts the same packet value repeatedly, enabling captured writes to be replayed without the native app. Bluetooth range and a powered, unconnected bulb are required; successful replay changes the bulb's color or turns it off, with no reported access beyond lighting control.
