Authenticated code execution via unbounded Sonos command copy
Published Jan 11, 2023 · Updated Apr 8, 2025
Stack-based buffer overflow in the PubNub cc handler in Insteon Hub firmware 1012 allows remote authenticated users to execute code. The cmd s_sonos path copies the untrusted s_sonos_cmd JSON value with strcpy into a 32-byte stack buffer without checking its length. Access to the PubNub service requires authentication; an overlong value overwrites stack data and enables code execution or a device crash.
