Authenticated code execution via unchecked cmd1 copy
Published Jan 11, 2023 · Updated Apr 8, 2025
Stack-based buffer overflow in Insteon Hub firmware 1012 allows remote authenticated users to execute code via a crafted PubNub command. The sn_ex handler passes the unbounded cmd1 JSON value to strcpy for a 100-byte stack buffer, overwriting saved registers and control data. A valid PubNub authentication key and the hub-specific cc channel are required; successful exploitation can crash the hub or execute code.
