Authenticated code execution via unchecked val copy
Published Jan 11, 2023 · Updated Apr 8, 2025
Stack-based buffer overflow in Insteon Hub firmware 1012 allows remote authenticated users to execute code via a crafted PubNub command. The cc-channel handler copies the s_b command's val string with strcpy into a 32-byte stack buffer without checking its length. A valid PubNub auth key and hub-specific channel are required; an overlong value can overwrite saved registers and the return address, enabling code execution or a crash.
