Local privilege escalation via lost Binder caller identity
Published Nov 27, 2024 · Updated Nov 29, 2024
Privilege escalation in Google Android 6 through 8.1 allows local users to access microphone audio without RECORD_AUDIO permission. RecognitionService queues Binder calls to a handler before checkPermissions uses checkCallingOrSelfPermission, losing the original caller identity and accepting the service's own permission. A locally running application can invoke the service without user interaction, resulting in unauthorized microphone-derived information exposure.
