Local privilege escalation via malformed parcel deserialization
Published Nov 15, 2024 · Updated Nov 19, 2024
Improper input validation in Android 8 MediaCas allows local users to start an activity with system privileges through a malformed parcel. MediaCas.java's createFromParcel reads crafted ParcelableCasData content inconsistently with its serialized layout, causing trailing parcel data to be interpreted as a privileged Intent. A low-privileged application can reach the path without user interaction and launch an activity with system privileges.
