System-privileged activity launch via parcel deserialization
Published Nov 15, 2024 · Updated Nov 19, 2024
Privilege escalation in Android 6.0 through 8.1 allows local users to start an activity with system privileges via a crafted parcel. ViewPager.SavedState.createFromParcel deserializes adapter state without the caller-provided class loader, causing parcel contents to be reconstructed in the wrong privilege context. A malicious app with ordinary local execution can trigger the flaw without user interaction, and the resulting activity runs with system privileges.
