CVE-2016-11070Network attack vector

Stored XSS via unvalidated theme colors

Published Jun 19, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024

Stored XSS in Mattermost Server before 3.1.0 allows remote authenticated users to inject scripts through custom theme color values. The user-theme update path accepted arbitrary strings as color properties, and applyTheme concatenated those values into generated CSS style content without restricting them to hexadecimal colors. A low-privileged user must save a crafted theme and another user must render it, allowing script execution that reads or alters data in the viewer's browser context.
