Password disclosure via unauthenticated SOAP requests
Published Apr 28, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024
Authentication bypass in affected NETGEAR router firmware allows remote attackers to read administrator and Wi-Fi passwords. The built-in net-cgi HTTP daemon accepts a blank form with a SOAPAction header as an authenticated Genie SOAP request, exposing password, serial-number, WLAN, and client data. Local-network access is sufficient; internet reachability requires the non-default remote-management setting, and the demonstrated consequence is disclosure rather than data modification.
