Local privilege escalation via update-file race
Published Mar 27, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024
Race condition in Lenovo System Update 5.07.0008 and earlier allows local users to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. Its update workflow validates downloaded files, then installs them later without preventing local replacement during the intervening window. A local user able to alter the staged update can win the timing window and have attacker-controlled code run with the updater's elevated privileges.
