Unauthenticated command execution via Groovy sandbox escape
Published Feb 17, 2015 · Updated Oct 22, 2025
Sandbox escape in Elastic Elasticsearch's Groovy engine allows remote attackers to execute shell commands via crafted search requests. In 1.3.0 through 1.3.7 and 1.4.0 through 1.4.2, the search API evaluates untrusted Groovy scripts whose sandbox permits java.lang.Math.class.forName to load restricted classes such as java.lang.Runtime. An accessible REST API and enabled dynamic Groovy scripting are required; commands run with the Elasticsearch Java process's privileges.
