IRC command execution via unsanitized tweet newlines
Published Mar 20, 2023 · Updated Aug 6, 2024
Command injection in Zarthus IRC Twitter Announcer Bot 1.1.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute IRC bot commands through tweets. get_tweets forwards tweet.text into an IRC message without neutralizing line breaks, so text after a newline is interpreted as a bot command. Exploitation requires control of a tracked Twitter account, awareness of its association with the bot, and bot permissions in the IRC channel; consequences are limited to commands the bot can execute there.
