Grade falsification via unfiltered ANSI escape sequences

Published Jan 13, 2023 · Updated Aug 6, 2024

Escape-sequence injection in gitlearn allows remote authenticated users to falsify grades by placing ANSI control codes in grade files. The getGrade and getOutOf functions in scripts/config.sh print grade-file fields without removing control characters, so a terminal interprets embedded ANSI sequences instead of displaying literal input. Access to modify a grade file is required; the demonstrated attack changes the grader's terminal display and can misrepresent assignment scores.
