Crash via undersized MP4 string box
Published Jan 24, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024
Integer underflow in VLC media player before 2.1.6 allows remote attackers to crash VLC through a crafted MP4 string box. MP4_ReadBox_String subtracts eight from an attacker-controlled box size without rejecting smaller values, then passes the wrapped length to malloc and memcpy, causing a heap buffer overflow. Triggering requires a user to explicitly open the crafted file or stream; a crash was demonstrated, while code execution was assessed as feasible but not demonstrated.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
